Valencia SNAP Flyers Team History
☛ Founded March 2012, by a collection of Special Olympics coaches, who were responding to increased interest from athletes seeking a greater challenge.
☛ S.N.A.P. - Special Needs Athletes & Peers
☛ Sanctioned by both the American Special Hockey Association and USA Hockey, the team will participate in ASHA & USA Hockey events and tournaments.
☛ There are approximately 60 sanctioned special needs hockey teams in the US. Three in the greater Los Angeles area. (California Condors in Panorama City and the Pasadena Maple Leafs)
☛ Open to all ages and genders. No skating experience required.
☛ 100% staffed by experienced special needs volunteers.
☛ Partnered with the Ice Station Valencia and the Valencia Flyers Junior A Hockey Club who serve as the team’s ice activity and hockey partners.
☛ Partnered with Easton and Zero Celsius to provide safety equipment for all players.
☛ Unlike 98% of all hockey programs in the US, this engaging and therapeutic activity is provided at virtually no cost to the athlete’s families. To date the team is 100% privately funded, which is a key component of a team whose players are primarily reliant on SSI benefits. A hockey program such as this would be financially impractical for many of our players.
☛ The hockey team provides opportunities for mobility, learning, and teamwork. Athletes discover an entirely different way of moving their bodies. Newly mined teamwork skills are a benefit both on and off the ice. Parents are excited that their children are participating in a sport that previously was out of reach.
☛ Partnered with ASHA, USAHockey, the LA Kings and UCT to host the inaugural ASHA SoCal Special Hockey Festival, June1st, 2013 at the Ice Station Valencia.
☛ Strategic planning includes the expansion of our roster, fostering additional partnerships, hosting additional tournaments and clinics, and traveling to participate in tournaments and clinics.
